Dear Sir/Madam,

You are being invited to take part in a research study that seeks to collect data to investigate injury risk and prevention in English basketball. Before you decide whether to take part, it is important for you to understand why the research is being done and what it will involve.  Please take time to read the following information carefully before continuing. When you have read and understood the information, if you wish to be included in the study, you will be asked to sign a Consent Form.

1. What is the purpose of the study?

Basketball is one of the most popular sports played in the country. As with all sports, there are risks involved with basketball, and it is in the interest of all stakeholders to make the game as safe as possible.

The primary aim of this study is to investigate coach and players’ knowledge and perceptions towards injury risk and prevention in English Basketball. We also seek to understand current behaviours towards injury prevention, alongside exploring club resources and management of injuries. This will allow us as to start building a picture towards injuries in English basketball.

2. Why have I been invited to participate?

We are seeking to recruit a wide-range of male or female participants from across England. Participants are eligible to be included if they are over 16 years old (as of 1st September 2022), who trained, played or coached Basketball in an English club/school/college in the 2022-23 season.

3. Do I have to take part?

It is up to you whether you take part in the study. If you want to take part, you must sign the consent form (next page) that confirms you have read and understand this information sheet, and you agree to be included in the study. You can withdraw from the study by contacting the research team within 6 weeks after completing the survey, without giving a reason, using the contact details below.

4. What would taking part involve?

You would be required to complete a one-time survey, which will take approximately 5-8 minutes to complete. The survey will ask demographic questions, including your basketball experience, alongside your injury history and perceptions towards injury risk and prevention.

5. What are the possible benefits of taking part?

There are no direct benefits to you being involved in the study. The data gathered in this survey will be used to establish the knowledge and perceptions of coaches and players towards injury risk and prevention in English Basketball. It is hoped these findings will then inform future policy and practice, making basketball safer for those playing the sport.

6. What are the possible disadvantages and risks of taking part?

There are no perceived risks for you in taking part in this study. However, should you have any concerns please contact the research team.

7. What will happen to the information/results collected in the project?

The online questionnaire will be analysed by the research lead at the University of Gloucestershire. Questionnaire records will be stored online (Microsoft OneDrive) which is only accessible by the research team.

We will produce a report and write scientific articles about the current risks of injury in youth basketball. However, no personal references to you or your team will be made in any report. Data will be anonymised during the analysis stage, with individuals coded with a participant number rather than a name. It will be possible to link the participant number and name for up to 10 years, after which it will be completely anonymised.

If you would like to see our Privacy Notice detailing how your data is stored, used and what this means for you please do click on the following link: Privacy Notice .
